Routes into midwifery

A midwife’s role spans a journey that begins by assisting women throughout their pregnancy and labour, onto the delivery of their baby and then the early postnatal period.

You can become a midwife by following a Nursing and Midwifery Council degree course, or if you are already a registered nurse, you can undertake a pre-registration midwifery shortened programme. Here are some of the pathways into midwifery:

Whichever route you take, we offer a unique development structure, giving you opportunity to progress within the Northumbria nursing and midwifery family.
